UK Freezes Budget Support for Malawi
By Ivy Mungcal on 15 July 2011

The United Kingdom will no longer provide general budget support to Malawi, following the African country’s repeated failure to address the British government’s governance and economic management-related concerns, a senior U.K. official has announced.

“The U.K. provides development assistance in order to help communities lift themselves out of grinding poverty, whether that’s through getting children into school, ensuring women survive childbirth or helping farmers grow enough food to feed their families and communities,” U.K. Secretary of State for International Development Andrew Mitchell said in a statement. “But poor people in Malawi and British taxpayers alike have been let down. In these circumstances I cannot justify the provision of general budget support for Malawi.”

U.K. budget support to Malawi totals approximately 19 million pounds this year, the Guardian says.

The British government has expressed concern over the intimidation of civil society organizations, suppression of demonstrations and the recent move of the Malawian government to overhaul the country’s exchange rate, according to the U.K. Department for International Development.

Mitchell said, that in the meantime, the U.K. will use other means to make sure health, education and other development programs targeting poor Malawians would continue.

The United Kingdom’s move is in line with international concern over the current economic and political situation in Malawi. The World Bank, African Development Bank, European Union, Norway and Germany have already suspended or ended their budget support for Malawi.

Earlier this year, the U.K. also suspended any new aid commitments to Malawi amid a diplomatic dispute with the country.
