by Jennifer Catan-Tilos

Dumaguete City (5 February) -- Negros Oriental is now responsible for the sustainable management of integrated water resources as the implementation of water and sanitation program are in placed. This was cited by GTZ technical adviser, Ulrike Lipkow as she takes her parting piece during a farewell get-together party for her by some project implementers.

Lipkow provides technical assistance and advisory service such as planning and management in the implementation of the water and sanitation project for 5 years and a half in the province.

She believed that these projects will go a long way because "the political leadership in the province takes it seriously and committed through funding allocation and provides manpower support for the projects, Lipkow said.

For his part, Provincial Governor Emilio Macias II handed over a certificate of appreciation to Lipkow and thanking her for bringing extraordinary technical expertise and experience on water sanitation in the province.

Governor Macias said the program assisted by German government greatly improved the water sanitation sector and paved the way to the reduction of poverty in the province.

Lipkow is assigned here to support the planning activities of the Provincial Planning and Development Office in Negros Oriental and supporting them in the long-term strategy development for the water and sanitation sector.

She said working with the PPDO is wonderful for its outstanding support and direct intervention in the implementation of the water and sanitation program in Negros Oriental, under the Philippine-German Cooperation/DILG-GTZ Water Program.

The German Technology Cooperation (GTZ), a German international funding agency will conclude its program only up to March 2009 to finish the project.

While the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) here supported by GTZ managed to create its council to oversee the sustainability, maintain and protect the water resources of the province.

The water conservation part of the project includes massive reforestation, protection of the watershed areas and massive information campaign.

The project is also in line with Republic Act 9275 otherwise known as the Clean Water Act.

The municipalities of Manjuyod and Valencia have been the recipients also of the GTZ Water Development Program in the province in line with the IWRM mandate. (PIA) [top]
