１７３：男女が泳ぐ？

今のホテルで朝食で一緒になるオーストラリアの伝染病専門家がいるが、その方は０３年から定期的に当地に来ているとのこと。海外での経験話を語ったが、海外での英語翻訳の苦労話になった。

専門的な内容を日本人に翻訳にさせるととんでもないことになるのだが、インドネシア人はかなりひどいという話になった。

Gender Mainstreaming

これをインドネシア人は「男と女が泳いでいた」、と訳したそうだ。さすがに笑ってしまったとのこと。

良く考えれば間違いに気づくのであるが、恥ずかしがり屋のインドネシア人は恥じて聞かなかったらしい。

ちなみに、gender mainstreamingのある定義では、

Gender mainstreaming is the public policy concept of assessing the different implications for women and men of any planned policy action, including legislation and programmes, in all areas and levels. The concept of gender mainstreaming was first proposed at the 1985 Third World Conference on Women in Nairobi. The idea has been developed in the United Nations development community[1]. The idea was formally featured in 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Most definitions conform to the UN Economic and Social Council formally defined concept:

Mainstreaming a gender perspective is the process of assessing the implications for women and men of any planned action, including legislation, policies or programmes, in all areas and at all levels. It is a strategy for making women's as well as men's concerns and experiences an integral dimension of the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes in all political, economic and societal spheres so that women and men benefit equally and inequality is not perpetuated. The ultimate goal is to achieve gender equality.


新型インフルエンザについては、やはり若者がかかりやすいという。免疫が効かないのだろうか。そう言えば、日本でも高校生など若者がかかっている。生まれた時から汚いものに触れさせないなどの影響か？

小生も海外途上国で突然の高熱で何度も倒れたが医者にもかからず自己再生能力で生還した経験がある。ある時、これは日本だが３日間４０度の高熱で会社を休んだがアルバイトの女の子が事態を上司に伝えず、後で上司から怒られた。「本当に病気だったのか？医者の診断書を見せろ。」と言われた。自宅で寝ていたと言っても信じてくれそうもなかった。そういう方々がコンサル会社でご出世される昨今なのは大変情けない。これは言い過ぎたか。そのころから会社の人心崩壊が始まっていたのかもしれない。

水と衛生、そして保健。水とは無縁ではない。当地省内のトイレにはUNICEFのwash your handsというメッセージが大きく張られているが石鹸もないのでは効き目は薄いであろう。無償で提供してもいいのだが、毎日無くなりそうだ。

トイレと言えば、これも蛇足だが、レソトで出会ったWHOの専門家が「トイレの排水溝にタンポンが大量につまっているのはびっくりだった」と言っていた。どうしてと聞いたところ、自分の血を取られて呪いをかけられることを真面目に恐れているとのことだった。

伝統や宗教、文化まで分からないとアフリカでの仕事は務まらないかもしれない。これもまた言い過ぎか？！
