作業の合間にテレビをスキャンしてたら、いい映画が始まっている。オスカーの影響か、南アのDSTVも過去にオスカーにノミネートされた名作を立て続けに放送している。
静かなアメリカ人というとどうしても日系人を想起してしまうが、有名な小説でもあるし、５８年と０２年に映画化されている。見たかったのだが、やっと機会が来た。
５０年代初頭、フランス統治下のヴェトナム・サイゴンを舞台にしている。イギリス人ジャーナリストとアメリカ人（民間支援団体だがCIAのようだ）の戦いだ。表面的には政治的な対決だが、内実はヴェトナム人女性との三角関係。詳細は伏せるが、男の嫉妬というものの恐ろしさが分かる。男の嫉妬は不気味ですね。
アジア人女性の虜になってしまった物語は、サマセット・モームでもあるし、この映画でもうまく表現している。マイケル・ケインは適役であった。
（余談だが、先日見たWarという映画でケイン・小杉がチョイ役ででていた。印象が薄いね。ロッキー青木の娘さんもでていたが不気味な日本人を演じていた。）
さて、ヴェトナムを扱った映画は結構ある。ロンリ―プラネット社のベスト１０では、

Three Seasons (1999) Harvey Keitel plays a veteran returning to Ho Chi Minh City to look for his daughter.
サイゴンという名前には特別な魅力があるようだ。古びた家々には静かな亡霊がいるそうだ。。。
